Welcome to LIVORNO

Information about LIVORNO Livorno was founded in 1577 and built by Buontalenti, commissioned by the Medicis, who thus won an important access to the sea. After the supremacy of Pisa, Livorno became, under the Medicis, an important port, equipped with fortresses and military outposts. Soon afterwards the town greeted a lively multiratial community, thanks to the politics of Ferdinando de Medici. In fact, he encouraged the reception of the exiled people who were subject to political or religious persecutions. With the unity of Italy (1868), the town lost its quality as a free port and its economical development diminished, reaching then the balance and the development degree of our days. Today Livorno is the second industrial and commercial centre in Tuscany, which has got one of the most important ports in the Tyrrhenian sea. Besides, it is the seat of the Naval Academy. In Livorno the view of a wonderful coast can be appreciated, embellished by the colours of the hills that characterize it, but anyone can also come in touch with the original and picturesque old town centre, that is typical of this city.
